Mwamba Foundation was established in 2000 by Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Chemengich (now the sitting Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kitale) together with Mrs. Dorcas Chemengich (currently the Kitale Diocese Women Ministry President) and their friends in the United States of America (USA). Mwamba Foundation was recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2003.

The name "Mwamba" is a Swahili word for "rock", expressing the stability Mwamba Foundation seeks to establish in the Kenyan people. The foundation works towards transforming lives in the United States of America and in Kitale, Kenya by building mutual partnerships that enhance human capacity through education, sharing of resources and cultural exchanges.
